Philipp Öttl wins the moto3 GP of Jerez (E)
Three days after his 22nd birthday, the German Moto3 rider was able to climb to the top step of the podium at the Grand Prix of Spain. Philipp started the race from 2nd and was right up there in the fight for the lead. In the opening laps, there was a scary moment when one of his competitors attempted to overtake and almost eliminated them both in that move. Luckily, it only resulted in a drop back a number of places in the leading group.
This did not hurt Philipp his determination as he kept his focus and quickly fought his way back to the lead. After numerous changes at the front of the pack and a big crash in the leading group at the end of the race, Philipp remained at the front fighting for the lead until the last corner where he managed to win the Spanish Grand Prix with a minimum difference of 0,059 seconds.
By claiming his first win Philipp and his father Peter, join an elite and select group of father-son race winners in the Grand Prix Motorcycle paddock. The next round of the Moto3 World Championship will take place in Le Mans (France) on May 20th, 2018.
Philipp Öttl after the race:
“I had a good start, but in the opening laps one rider touched my rear wheel and it almost went wrong. Luckily I was able to find my rhythm quickly again. I could close the gap and fight my way back into the lead of the race. When I took over the lead, I tried to increase the pace and push hard.
I just did my own thing and as soon as someone overtook me, I instantly tried to fight back and re-gain first position again. That went very well because the setup of my motorcycle was nearly perfect. Good acceleration out of corners is one of the strengths of my KTM. And the team worked excellent, the teamwork in our crew is amazing, the same way as it was as we are together for years.
Yes, we did it!!! My first GP win!!! Thanks to my team and my sponsors who made this special moment possible. That’s all there is to say.”
